HISTORY ON FILM

MOVIES

Cleopatra (1934):

Queen Cleopatra (Claudette Colbert) uses her feminine wiles to become sole ruler of Egypt. By turns kittenish and cold-blooded, Cleopatra wraps such otherwise responsible Roman worthies as Julius Caesar and Marc Antony around her well-manicured little finger. ....as fresh and alive today as it was sixty years ago. And the highlights! Few DeMille films can match the orgasmic splendor of Cleopatra's barge scene, or can pack as much of a dramatic wallop as Cleopatra's suicide from the bite of a (real!) snake. Remarkably, for all the enormous sets and elaborate costumes, Cleopatra came in at a budget of $750,000--some $39,250,000 less than the 1963 Elizabeth Taylor remake.

Cleopatra

Attila:

Attila the Hun, fabled leader of a band of nomadic warriors who fearlessly took on the might of the Roman Empire, has his life story brought to the screen in this two-part miniseries. Attila features Tim Curry as Theodosius, Simmone Jade MacKinnon as N'Kara, and Reg Rogers as Valentinian. Attila was first aired on the USA Cable Network in 2001. DVD

Attila

Braveheart (1995):

The amazing story of William Wallace (Mel Gibson), a 13th-century Scottish warrior who rallies his countrymen to combat the tyranny of England's King Edward... romance, bloody battle and treachery abound. Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Cinematography, Makeup, and Sound Effects.

Braveheart

Elizabeth (1998):

This British-made historical drama depicts the rise of young Elizabeth Tudor to Queen of England, a reign of intrigue and betrayals. In 1554, Queen Mary I (Bloody Mary) tries to restore Catholicism as England's single faith. With no heir to the crown, she maneuvers to keep her Protestant half-sister Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett) from succeeding her, but her efforts fail.

Elizabeth

Parsifal:

This is a four-hour film performance of Wagner's opera "Parsifal" - about the legend of the Holy Grail and the Sacred Spear used by Longinus to pierce the side of Christ. Sung in German with subtitles. DVD

Parsifal

Rob Roy (1995):

The 18th century Scottish legend of Robert Roy MacGregor comes to life in this stylish adaptation of the swashbuckling novel by Sir Walter Scott.

Rob Roy

Hamlet:

Directed by Franco Zeffirelli. Stars Mel Gibson, Glenn Close, and Alan Bates. An interpretation of Shakespeare's play that is well-acted and very understandable for the modern viewer.

Hamlet

The Ten Commandments (1956):

The Ten Commandments was the last film directed by Cecil B. DeMille. The story relates the life of Moses, from the time he was discovered in the bullrushes as an infant by the pharoah's daughter, to his long, hard struggle to free the Hebrews from their slavery at the hands of the Egyptians. A sweeping epic "with a cast of thousands". Magnifique. DVD

Lucrezia Borgia (1935):

Lucrezia Borgia

The title character in Lucrezia Borgia exudes more sex appeal and wears fewer clothes than any previous screen incarnation of the infamous Florentine poisoner. Edwige Feuillere stars as Lucrezia, who learns her ruthless political cunning at the knee of Machiavelli himself. Sold into a marriage of convenience by her craven brother Cesare, she soon holds all of 15th-century Florence in thrall. Her despotic rule is energetically challenged by tireless reformer Savonarola. In French with English SUBTITLES.

Won the Academy Award for best picture and best actor, etc! Won Best Picture at the Golden Globe Awards ..lavishly mounted epic directed in the grand manner of sword-and-sandal sagas such as Ben Hur and Spartacus. Gladiators' sweeping narrative .."I saw it 3 times at the theatres and am a big ancient world history buff. This is the best movie I've seen in 20 years!"

Gladiator

Anne of the Thousand Days:

Chronicles the romance between Britain's King Henry VIII (Richard Burton) and his ill-fated second wife Anne Boleyn (Genevieve Bujold). Richard Burton is ideally cast, but it is Genevieve Bujold who delivers the best, most complex performance in the film. In the end of course, poor Anne loses her head.

Anne of the Thousand Days

History Makers: William the Conqueror - The Triumphant King:

Archival films, photography, reenactments, and commentary by historians are used for color and perspective. This episode provides a fresh look at William the Conqueror, whose exploits stunned the world and changed the face of England's map. From the History Channel. Usually Available in 1-2 weeks

...from the novel by Irving Stone, "The Agony and the Ecstasy" is the story of the 16th century war of wills between Renaissance artist Michelangelo (Charlton Heston) and "warrior pope" Julius II (Rex Harrison). A visual delight with fine perfomances all around. For the film an exact copy of the Sistine Chapel was built. (When in Rome we visited the chapel and it has been restored and cleaned. Some of the painted ceiling figures are so well-crafted they look totally 3-dimensional rather than flat. (- EB, Ages Past))

Agony and the Ecstasy

The Quest for Fire:

Go back some eighty thousand years into the past. The cave-dwelling Ulam tribe huddles around a natural fire source for comfort and survival. When that source is extinguished, tribesmen are sent out on a "quest for fire." After several days of wandering through the prehistoric landscape, they encounter a group who know the secret of how to start fires. The trouble is, however, that they are cannibals. Based on a novel by J. H. Rosny Sr.,'Quest for Fire' convincingly creates the world of the Past and believably molds its characters within the context of their surroundings and their limited knowledge of the world. DVD

Quest for Fire

Nicholas and Alexandra:

Digitally remastered audio & video. Covers the rise and fall of the last of the Russian Romanovs from their wedding to their murder by Russian revolutionaries. The unfortunate illness of the heir to the throne and their reliance on Rasputin cause them to overlook the suffering of the Russsian people, and act to hasten the couple's downfall.

Nicholas and Alexandra

Mad Love:

This lavish historical drama was inspired by the true story of Juana, Joan the Mad, who became Queen of Spain before her willfulness and jealousy robbed her of her power. During the late 15th century, Juana was born to the Spanish royal family, and as a teenager her mother, Queen Isabella, arranged for her to marry a powerful nobleman from Brussels, whom she comes to love. After Isabella dies, Juana becomes the Queen of Spain, but her rise to power is tempered by anger and disappointment when Juana learns Filipe is having an affair with an exotic dancer. In the end she finds herself behind bars for the next 50 years. In Spanish with English SUBTITLES.

Mad Love

Romeo and Juliet (1936):

Directed by George Cukor. Stars Norma Shearer, Leslie Howard and John Barrymore. A lavish production of Shakespeare's tale about two star-crossed lovers, is extremely well-produced and acted. In fact, it is so well-done, that it is easy to forget that Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer are too old to be playing the title characters.

Romeo and Juliet

The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938):

The best version on film. Swashbuckling through the action sequences (sword fighting, wielding bow and arrow, swinging onto rooftops), Errol Flynn turns in what most critics agree is the finest performance of his film career. Amazingly, Flynn wasn't even nominated for an Academy Award, although the movie did pick up Oscars for art direction, editing and Erich Wolfgang Korngold's thrilling score. The supporting cast, meanwhile, isn't exactly an amateur troupe. Joining Flynn in his adventures are, among others, Olivia deHavilland as Maid Marian, Claude Rains as Prince John, and Basil Rathbone as Sir Guy of Gisborne.

Adventures of Robin Hood

Barabbas (1962):

Barabbas is a literate, well-mounted Biblical epic. Anthony Quinn stars as Barabbas, the thief who was pardoned in place of Jesus. For the rest of his life, the guilt-ridden criminal tries to justify his existence and to determine his place in the scheme of things. Nice symbolic use of light and shadow. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Early Christianity or 1st century AD. Roman History. This is the VHS version; the DVD is also available.

Barabbas

Caligula / Unrated Version:

Caligula

Gore Vidal's script is surprisingly accurate, and manages to be entertainingly vulgar while bringing a rather loathsome slice of human history to vivid life, warts and all. The more explicit scenes were directed by Bob Guccione and Giancarlo Lui, causing both Vidal and Brass to remove their names from the credits.

Gladiators: Bloodsport of the Colosseum:

This film follows the careers of hypothetical gladiators, from their purchase at Roman slave markets through their training, careers, and ultimately, public deaths on the hot sands of a thousand Roman arenas. David Hemmings, who played Cassius in the film "Gladiator", narrates this film. DVD

The Last Days of Pompeii (1913):

Last Days of Pompeii

Mario Caserini. 1 Hour 28 Minutes on DVD. Silent film. An oldie but a goodie.
